Thriving with ThryvOn™ Technology
Jack and Brandon Huerkamp
Father-and-son duo Jack and Brandon Huerkamp in Macon, Mississippi are veterans of the Deltapine® brand New Product Evaluator (NPE) Program. As NPE growers since the program’s beginning in 2008, they know what makes strong cotton. This year, the Huerkamps planted and trialed stewarded Deltapine® brand ThryvOn™ Technology cotton varieties. Their results may not necessarily be representative, but as the GroundBreakers® Field Trial results roll in, we’ll provide updates on what you can expect.

May - Planting
NPE growers Jack and Brandon Huerkamp planted a stewarded Ground Breakers® Field Trial for cotton variety candidates containing ThryvOn Technology on their farm in Macon, Mississippi.
May - Planning
Jack and Brandon made a season-long plan to evaluate aspects of the Deltapine brand cotton variety candidates stacked with ThryvOn Technology, including emergence, the technology’s efficacy against pressure from tarnished plant bugs and thrips species*, yield performance and fiber quality.
May - Mapping and Tracking
Jack planted the field with three Deltapine ThryvOn pre-commercialized variety candidates — DP 2131 B3TXF, 20R816B3TXF and 20R822B3TXF — surrounding a 4-acre section dedicated to a cotton variety without ThryvOn Technology. The field was mapped and tracked by Climate FieldView™ platform.
May - Emergence
With lots of moisture and adequate sunshine, ThryvOn Technology cotton plants began to emerge within five days after planting.
June - Comparing Plants
Jack compared ThryvOn Technology cotton (left) to cotton that does not contain ThryvOn Technology (right).
June – Evaluating Thrips Species*
The variety without ThryvOn Technology planted in the field trial suffered damage from heavy thrips species* pressure. Meanwhile, the cotton containing ThryvOn Technology was healthier and showed little to no damage from thrips species* pressure.
June - Thrips Species* Evaluation Results
After scouting for thrips species*, Jack found that the field containing products with ThryvOn Technology had the only cotton acres on their farm that did not meet the economic thresholds for treatment for thrips species* in early June.
August - Inspecting Insect Pressure
The Macon region had extreme pressure from thrips species* and other insects early in the season. On August 9, it was clear that ThryvOn Technology helped the plants grow, mature and maintain their health in comparison to the cotton that does contain ThryvOn Technology.
August - Treating Plant Bugs
Over the summer, all cotton fields managed by the Huerkamps' that did not contain ThryvOn Technology were treated for plant bugs – some up to three times. The ThryvOn Technology cotton showed fewer pest counts and never reached an economic threshold requiring a treatment.
December – Year-End Results
The ThryvOn cotton varieties’ yields appear to be competitive with other varieties planted on the Huerkamp’s farm. The ThryvOn technology proved to alleviate plant bug pressure, especially in fending off the heavy thrips pressure seen in the area this season.
*ThryvOn™ Technology may help reduce insecticide applications for tarnished plant bugs and thrips species (tobacco thrips (Frankliniella fusca); Western flower thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis); tarnished plant bug (Lygus lineolaris); and the Western Tarnished Plant bug (Lygus Hesperus)). Scouting is critical to determine which and how many insecticide applications are recommended to avoid economic losses greater than the pest management costs (i.e., when economic thresholds are met).
ThryvOn Technology Benefits
ThryvOn Technology
The industry’s first biotechnology trait with season-long protection against tarnished plant bugs and thrips species.*
May Reduce Insecticide Applications
May help reduce the number of insecticide applications needed for control of tarnished plant bugs and thrips species.*
Stacked with Bollgard® 3 XtendFlex® Technology
Provides a broad spectrum of protection against yield-robbing pests and more options against tough-to-control and resistant weeds.
The New Product Evaluator Program
The New Product Evaluator Program is a collaboration between Deltapine brand and cotton growers across the country.
NPE growers evaluate pre-commercial variety candidates on their own operations, collecting valuable data that helps to determine the next class of strong cotton.
ThryvOn™ Technology is not currently available for commercial sale or commercial planting. Commercialization is dependent on multiple factors, including successful conclusion of the regulatory process. ThryvOn™ Technology may not be registered in all states. Check with your state pesticide regulatory agency for the registration status in your state.
ThryvOn™ Technology has received full approval for planting in the United States but, as of the date this material was published, is pending approval in certain export markets. Specific plans for commercialization depend upon regulatory approvals and other factors.
